Populating Pee-wee’s Playhouse: Swazzle creates 19 puppets for
Pee-wee Herman’s triumphant return

LOS ANGELES, CA – January 18, 2010 – Glendale, CA-based puppet company Swazzle has re-created many of the classic puppet characters from Pee-wee’s Playhouse and built a handful of new puppets for The Pee-wee Herman Show, now playing at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. Directed by Obie Award winner Alex Timbers and starring Paul Reubens, Lynne Stewart, John Paragon and Phil LaMarr, the stage show reunites Pee-wee Herman with many of his puppet pals from the hit television series Pee-wee’s Playhouse.

That show was appointment television for Swazzle Creative Directors Sean and Patrick Johnson as kids, so when they learned of plans for a stage show, the brothers jumped at the chance to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime production. Swazzle’s team worked with design consultant Jimmy Cuomo and puppet producers The Chiodo Brothers to build Clockey, Randy, the Flowers, the Fish, Pterri, ShamWow and Cowboy Curtis’ horse, Ginger. “Working on this show is a dream come true. When I was 9 years old watching Pee-wee’s Playhouse, I never dreamed that I would get to work with Pee-wee Herman one day,” says Patrick.

The Pee-wee Herman Show features hand puppets, rod puppets, marionettes and walk-around costumes, and each posed unique building challenges. Sean, Patrick and fellow puppet builders Russ Walko and Artie Esposito worked round the clock carving foam, dyeing fleece, and stitching Spandex to complete the puppets on a demanding schedule.

The marionettes proved to be particularly challenging. For example, Pterri the Pterodactyl has to fly in from the ceiling, swoop around the room, and crash-land—a vertical distance of more than 20 feet. Swazzle relied on the advice of UNIMA-award winning puppetry consultant Basil Twist, whose idea for a split controller was essential to pulling off the stunt.

In addition to building 19 puppets for The Pee-wee Herman Show, Swazzle provided all of the puppeteers. Working as Puppeteer Coordinator, Sean assembled a team whose combined credits include work for The Jim Henson Company, The Walt Disney Company, the Muppets and the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. “The puppetry in the show is challenging,” says Sean. “I worked from the top of my list to pull in the most talented puppeteers in Los Angeles.”

Because so many different forms of puppetry are employed in the show, puppeteers are hidden everywhere—behind, beneath, on and high above the stage. Several of the characters are performed by multiple puppeteers, who trade off or work together depending on the puppet’s location and method of operation. At one point in the show, five puppeteers work together to perform Pterri as he crash-lands as a marionette and pops up as a hand puppet.

In addition to Sean Johnson (Pterri, Randy, ShamWow, the Fish, Mr. Knucklehead) and Patrick Johnson (Globey, Pterri, Mr. Knucklehead), the show features the puppetry of Artie Esposito (Chairry), Russ Walko (Conky), Carla Rudy (Pterri, Randy, ShamWow, Mr. Window, Mr. Knucklehead), Victoria Johnson (Magic Screen), Haley Jenkins (Ginger, Pterri, the Flowers, Mr. Knucklehead, Magic Screen), and Erik Kuska (Clockey, Mr. Window, Mr. Knucklehead).

Swazzle’s team members have spent years honing their puppet-building and performing skills in live puppet shows for libraries and schools, along with stage and screen projects for clients like Patton Oswalt, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, W!ldbrain/The Dan Clark Company, and Overbrook Entertainment. The Pee-wee Herman Show is the next leap forward for this young puppet company as it continues to develop and expand.

Swazzle Puppeteer Auditions

Swazzle is looking for puppeteers to perform live puppet shows at libraries across Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties.

These 45-minute puppet shows will be presented during the summer as entertainment for the libraries’ summer reading programs.

The puppeteer will be required to transport the show to the venue; interact with the client and the public in a professional manner; and set up, perform and break down the show. There may be multiple performances per day.

Performers will be paid a flat fee per show.

Swazzle Awarded Grant by Puppeteers of America

The Puppeteers of America Endowment awarded Swazzle a grant to produce a new school puppet show, The Swazzle Workshop Live. The grant was announced at an award ceremony at this year's Puppeteers of America festival, Puppet Rampage.

The Swazzle Workshop Live is based on Swazzle's popular web series, The Swazzle Workshop. It will be a departure from their story based puppet shows. The new show will guide the audience through the puppet show creation process. Children will see behind the scenes of puppet design, puppet building and performance.

Swazzle will begin work on the new puppet show in September 2007, and plans to book into into schools for the 2008 school year.

Swazzle is looking for two puppeteers for a new live puppet show that will tour Southern California. The show will be bilingual and performed for Spanish speaking audiences at community events, so at least one puppeteer must be fluent in Spanish. On Tuesday June 12 Swazzle kicks off it’s 2007 Summer Puppet Show Season. For the first time ever the popular puppet company will be touring California libraries with three puppet shows. A third production was added this year to meet the growing demand for Swazzle’s live puppet shows - they will be performing 160 library puppet shows, a record for the company. Each of the puppet shows are mysteries, based on the state wide library summer reading program theme, “Get a Clue’. Like Swazzle’s previous productions, they feature hand made puppets, painted back drops, and live performances from their talented team of puppeteers.

Rex and Boots Super Sleuths will play in Northern California, and Bugsy Brown Private Fly and The Case of the Elephant Trunk will both play in Southern California.

Prairie Dog Pete and the Magic Buffalo
This entertaining puppet show for the whole family, tells the story of Prairie Dog Pete, a down on his luck gold miner. He is about to give up and go home when he stumbles upon Jack Rabbit, an old prospector who has fallen down a mine shaft. Thinking quickly, Pete throws Jack a rope and pulls him to safety. To reward Pete’s kindness Jack gives him some special animals, including a Magic Buffalo. Pete’s good nature is turned against him by the notorious outlaw Coyote Clyde, who’s greediness gets the best of him. In the end everybody learns an important lesson about honesty. After the puppet show, audiences are treated to a special behind the scenes presentation.

Swazzle will be offering two new puppet shows for the 2007 summer season that runs June 15, 2007 to August 15, 2007. Both puppet shows will be based on the Summer Reading Program theme: Get a Clue. Harry (a small mammal of the Late Cretaceous Period) is out to impress his dinosaur friends and scare away the roaring Tyrannosaurus Rex. Instead, he embarks on a journey of self discovery and true friendship. Harry and the Tyrannosaurus Rex, a live puppet show, is just one of several stories told by local puppet troupe, Swazzle.

Sean and Patrick Johnson, twin puppeteers, will bring the magic of Swazzle to the La Canada Flintridge library on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m., and introduce the audience to B.A.R.K. the Robot Dog.

Eccentric inventor Mr. Johnson leaves his pets Ratchet the Cat and Rivet the Dog home on a rainy day. The house is turned upside down when Rivet discovers B.A.R.K., an unpredictable robot dog. Rivet's new robotic companion turns out to be trouble, ruining Ratchet's prized yarn ball and threatening to destroy the house. Ratchet and Rivet must set things right before Mr. Johnson comes home.

Swazzle has been performing live puppet shows in local libraries for several years. This past September, the puppeteers made their theatrical debut at the NOHO Arts Center with a story enjoyed through generations, Harry and the Tyrannosaurus Rex, a dinosaur tale that re-imagines the classic Aesop's fable, Androcles and the Lion. After the show, Sean and Patrick drew back the curtain to give the audience a glimpse of how the show works. The duo illustrated how each puppet was made and performed.

"One of our goals," Sean remarked, "is to show kids that they can do what we do in their own living room." "It's not like it's a magic show," explained Patrick. "There's no trick to it."

"It's a great show," said Jonathan Zenz, managing director of the Noho Arts Center. "It's got a great message for families. We're looking forward to having them back."

Local youngsters packed into the Newhall Library on Tuesday to watch the live puppet show, Rex and Boots Super Sleuths" and help solve the mystery of Lady Fromage's missing goldfish.

The show, put on by puppeteering company Swazzle, was written and performed by puppeteers Anita Coulter and Sean Johnson to coincide with the Newhall Library's summer reading program, "Claws, Paws, Scales and Tales."

Coulter and Johnson said their puppet shows are always popular with kids and they have performed at the Santa Clarita libraries numerous times.

Swazzle is on its summer library tour and is making stops at local libraries. Today the puppeteers are scheduled to perform B.A.R.K. The Robot Dog at the Valencia Library, at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, they are set to perform Rex and Boots Super Sleuths at the Canyon Country Library, at 3:30 p.m.

Many parents in the audience think Swazzle's puppet shows are fun to watch. Lori Rivas of Newhall brought her four kids: Gabe, 10, Nathan, 8, Belen, 5, and Eli, 2, to watch Rex Sleuth and his assistant, Boots, take down Sherman Sheepdog. "They always do a good job with the scenery and puppets," Rivas said. "They are creative with their characters and always have an intriguing storyline. It's a very professional show." Allison Leishman of Newhall brought her 5-year-old daughter Abby to the show. "I could hear her laughing during the show," Leishman said. Abby said she likes the characters because they are goofy.

Coulter said their shows are unique because the stage, props and puppets are handmade. They also perform live, so none of the shows are exactly the same.

Coulter and Johnson said their favorite part of putting on a puppet show is when the children laugh at their jokes. "The most satisfying part is when the kids come up to me after and ask how I did it," Coulter said. Because so many kids want to know how Coulter and Johnson work their puppetry magic, the team will give a behind-the-scenes look for the audience after each show. Johnson said he hopes his shows encourage kids to put on their own puppet shows. "I want to inspire them," he said.

Puppet Show Tour Begins

The booking season has nearly come to a close, and the Swazzle tour schedule has been finalized. Shows are still trickling in, but the current count is 129. Busy Month for Swazzle

February was a busy month for Swazzle. The "Hazel and the Dragon" puppet e-card produced with Puppet Greetins.com was the second most popular greeting for the month of February. Despite only being out for a month, it ranked among the top 15 for the year. The Swazzle e-card proved so popular that a new non-Valentine version was produced, so it could be sent out year round. The e-card was also posted on YouTube.com where it can viewed for free as a streaming short film.

Summer puppet shows continue to come in, as the booking season winds down. As of this posting the summer total is an impressive 125. Swazzle sits poised to perform more library puppet shows than any other California puppet company for the third year running.

Swazzle.com, Swazzle’s innovative puppet web site also saw lots of activity. Despite being a short month, the total hit count for February passed 90,000 making it the second highest on record. More notably the number of unique daily visits was up to an average of 265 - more than five times last years number, and highest daily average to date. Swazzle.com has also recorded over 1,000 referrals, the highest to date.

For the past couple of months Swazzle puppeteers Sean Johnson, Patrick Johnson, and Anita Coulter have been posting blogs focusing on various aspects of puppetry. Puppet 101 is about puppet building, Puppet Design focuses on design for puppetry, and Puppet U centers around puppet shows and performance. The puppet blogs have been a huge hit in the online puppet community and readership now numbers in the thousands.

Summer is just around the corner and the work continues for Swazzle. Their team of puppet builders are now hard at work building puppets for their two new summer puppet shows, "Bark the Robot Dog" and "Rex and Boots Super Sleuths".

Swazzle.com logs over 124,396 hits in January

January was a record month for swazzle.com. The site logged 124,396 hits up from 64,147 the previous month. This continues a pattern of growth that started in November when hits jumped from 20,387 to 64,780. In December the hits held steady at 64,147 and as January came to a close swazzle.com was on target to beat those numbers. Towards the end of the month the site received a mention on the prominent blog Drawn! and it pushed the hits to a new record high.

Swazzle puppeteers Sean Johnson and Victoria Lee Johnson were the first presenters on stage at this year’s Orange County Performer’s Showcase held at the Laguna Hills Community Center and Sports Complex. As in the past two showcases, they performed a little teaser with puppets from Swazzle’s new puppet show B.A.R.K. The Robot Dog. During the breaks they booked performances bringing the summer puppet show count to 101.

The Swazzle team is now hard at work building the set for their Valentine's Day E-Card for Puppet Greetings. In the 30 E-Card, featuring cast members of Hazel and the Dragon, we’ll visit Hazel’s front door and the inside Walnut the Wizard’s house. In these pictures Patrick is painting a rock wall on masonite. For the shoot the rock wall will be redressed and serve as both sets.

August Now Open to Regions 2 & 3

Due to increased demand in Southern California, August has been opened up to Regions 2 and 3. Now libraries in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties can book Swazzle’s popular puppet shows from July 31 to September 1st, in addition to their previously scheduled regions. Today Swazzle presented at the San Bernardino Performer’s Showcase and took in more bookings for their summer tour. They booked 20 puppet shows in 30 minutes, bringing their 2006 summer total to 81. Next week they will present at the third and final showcase for Orange county libraries.

Swazzle Performs at Library Opening

On Saturday January 7, 2006 Swazzle became the first puppet company to perform at the new Santa Monica Public Library. The show was part of the libraries grand opening celebration.

Swazzle puppeteers Sean and Patrick Johnson performed the popular dinosaur puppet show Harry and the Tyrannosaurus to a packed house in the new children’s room.

The opening day party also included a Mexican fiesta, a marching band, and book signings from special guests Jamie Lee Curtis and Rhea Perlman.

L.A. County Showcase

Swazzle puppeteers Sean and Patrick Johnson presented a short teaser featuring puppets from the new puppet show B.A.R.K. The Robot Dog during the L.A. County Performer’s Showcase. The librarians in attendance were previewing shows to book for their summer reading programs. Acts included, magicians, animal acts, storytellers and more. Swazzle will be presenting in two more showcases, the first is July 18 in San Bernardino and the second is January 26 in Laguna Hills.

21 Bookings on the First Day

Today at 10:00 am the Swazzle phone lines opened and we started taking bookings for our 2006 Summer Puppet Show Season. Despite the fact that today is a bank holiday, (and most libraries were closed) we managed to take in 21 bookings - as of this posting. With two new pet themed puppet shows available, B.A.R.K.
